As part of the Padmaavat re-release campaign, renowned filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali will bring the classic back to the box office on February 6, 2025.
The re-release is timed perfectly for the epic film’s 7th anniversary, first hitting the theatres on January 25, 2018, making it one of the most acclaimed Bollywood films of all time.
‘Padmaavat was a cinematic experience that deserved the biggest screens possible,’ said the spokesperson from Bhansali Productions. ‘We are thrilled to be able to screen it again for those who were unable to watch or for die-hard devotees of the film.’
A Film That Defined an Era
Starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, and Shahid Kapoor, Padmaavat is a fictional historical drama based on the epic poem by Malik Muhammad Jayasi Padmavat, focusing on the character of Queen Padmavati and her suitor, Alauddin Khilji.
The heart-stopping visuals, unforgettable music, and powerful performances, including a jaw-dropping portrayal of the emotionless Khilji by Ranveer Singh, will remain etched in people’s minds forever.
Nonetheless, the release was surrounded by controversy. Opposition from fringe groups caused disruptions, which later led to the film being retitled from Padmavati to Padmaavat.
However, the film was well received and performed phenomenally well in the box office, earning over ₹560 crore internationally.
Why a Re-Release Now?
The return of Bollywood films, such as Jawan or Animal, back to IMAX and other premium formats is a perfect example of the re-release phenomena and is on the rise.
It is only logical that Padmaavat’s return accompanies this growing trend of celebrating iconic films on the big screens.
Taran Adarsh, a trade analyst, provided his insight by saying,
“Theatrical re-releases have gained a decent amount of traction, especially for films like Padmaavat that rely on spectacle and visual grandeur. Today film viewers want grand lavish imagery on their screens which is something this film provides decently.”
Where and How to Watch?
Industry insiders believe that Padmaavat will be remastered and re-released in an IMAX 3D adaptation alongside standard format coverages, which will allow viewers to experience the film and its graphics to its fullest.
Leading multiplex chains like PVR, INOX, and Cinepolis are expected to announce advance bookings soon.
However, for those looking to view the film at home, it is still available on Amazon Prime Video.
Fans React with Excitement
Ever since the news broke regarding the re-release, fans have been vocal on social media regarding their joy.
Starting from hashtags like #PadmaavatReturns and #SLBMasterpiece that gained a lot of viewership on X (formerly Twitter).
A fan tweeted,
“Can’t wait to see Deepika’s Padmavati and Ranveer’s Khilji on screen again. This is cinema at its finest!”
