A Zomato Order in Pune Led to More Than a Meal

Last Updated on 3 weeks by Amiya Nandy

It was a normal food order like the others. A paneer tikka sandwich, Bingo chips, and oat raisin cookies – the kind of items that anybody would need. However, Shripal Gandhi, the resident of Pune, was just like any other regular person who has good days and bad days when he ordered an item from Zomato and then waited, like all of us, expecting just a knock on the door and a warm meal.

However, the situation was much the same as in many cases. The bag had only the sandwich whereas the other items were nowhere to be found.

Shripal, frustrated by the situation but staying calm, notified the delivery agent about the mistake. “The chips and cookies are missing,” he said. The rider looked dejected but he did not try to fabricate excuses. He just politely answered, “Sir, please call the restaurant or Zomato. They’ll fix it.”

Shripal did exactly that. The restaurant accepted the fault and authorized the delivery agent with ₹20 to go back and pick the missing items.

It wasn’t just the customer service that occurred; it was an act of honesty without anyone knowing.

A Trip Back, A Precept Conveyed

The man didn’t have any second thoughts and immediately and ran back to the restaurant, took the snacks and returned, all in a happy mood. When Shripal tried to give him the ₹20, the delivery agent declined the offer.

“Sir, God has given me enough,” he said. “Why should I take money for someone else’s mistake?”

That’s when the tale actually took a U turn.

A Way to reach the other side for a Delivery Agent

In a very brief conversation, the delivery agent told Shripal a part of his life. He was a construction supervisor at Shapoorji Pallonji and his monthly salary was ₹1.25 lakh. But due to a car accident, his left side of the body got paralyzed and he had to stop his career in the corporate.

With job offers being no more and bills constantly coming up, he shifted to Zomato.

“I owe my family’s sustenance to Zomato,” he said. “I am just a little bit disabled but life has given me luck. I’m not going to let my mistake spoil their name.”

He is working now with a lack of some mobility and does the same pride and duty he once had in his office job for others by delivering food. His daughter, he said with pride, is in dental school now.

Something More Than the Delivery

Shripal didn’t share this online initially to talk about Zomato and their good or bad service or the missing cookie, instead, he meant to make a point to others. The delivery man never pointed the finger at anyone, never whispered for help, and didn’t bring up his background until he was asked. He did the deed, did it right, and left behind it a tale to stay even when his job was done.

In a world where the people behind the service often remain unheard, this episode served as a reminder to the customer in question and helped him acknowledge the quiet dignity of the man who used to lay bricks and is now in charge of making the deliveries.

It’s not every wrong order that has a good story with it, but this is one of them.

We got to remember through this one that employment may be lost, money may decrease, and formalities may disappear but the personality won’t go anywhere.

At times, the most important thing you get in the Zomato pouch is not what you have ordered. It’s that thing which someone has given to you without even asking you in return.
