Kunal Kohli’s romantic movie drama Bobby Aur Rishi Ki Love Story was recently released on Disney+ Hotstar. The movie has been creating quite the buzz due to its new leads, Kaveri Kapur and Vardhaan Puri. However, there are high expectations within the audience and the question must be asked, Does it meet them? Let’s dive deeper.
“When worlds collide and the past meets the present on the precocious path to love, the narratives which unfold are sure to leave a delightful reminiscence.” The film tells the story of young Bobby (Kaveri Kapur) and Rishi (Vardhaan Puri) who are both romantics and believe in the softer romanticized versions of love. Bobby Aur Rishi Ki Love Story attempts to merge millennial rom-com with old-school romance. From love and destiny to personal development, the narrative’s scope has the potential to be captivating. Unfortunately, it doesn’t quite hit the mark.
Kaveri Kapur is the daughter of acclaimed Indian director Shekhar Kapur, so there were high expectations for her debut film, and she did not disappoint as she approached the character of Bobby with earnestness. To some extent, she manages to capture the essence of her character but her performance is made a little bland due to underwhelming character progression.
Famed actor Amrish Puri’s grandson Vardhaan Puri shows his impressive level of confidence while portraying Rishi. He does make his character charming but sadly his appeal is mostly wasted due to the lack of script.
Notable performances from veteran actors in brief roles tasks the supporting cast members to delve more into the plot’s focus.
Direction and Cinematography
With classics like Hum Tum and Fanaa, Kunal Kohli has always expressed how this love story is of his ‘cutest’ yet. Although he beautifully captures picture perfect moments, the film lags behind on pacing. As the film progresses, these visuals struggles to keep up with the film’s grandness. The cinematography is breath taking, but the storytelling fails to match to the visual appeal.
Music and Soundtrack
A major highlight of the movie is the soundtracks, especially with the stunning compositions of A.R. Rahman. Ek Dhaaga Toda Maine, was phenomenal when sung by Kaveri Kapur and she herself shares the positive feedback on her performance. The strong aspects of the film features the soundtrack as it fuses soft tunes with modern beats.
Critical and Audience Reception
The reviews on Bobby Aur Rishi Ki Love Story varies greatly:
Times of india rating it a 2 out of 5 for having an overused plot with no emotional buildup.
Bollywood Hungama showed appreciation to the efforts while mentioning the incredibly lacking breathtaking moments of classic Bollywood romance stories.
Rediff.com stated that the characters were modern, but they were lacking depth.
Social media responses are mixed. Some users compliment the new couple and the nice songs, while others attack the film for bringing nothing new to romance movies.

Like many other bollywood films, Bobby Aur Rishi Ki Love Story was released on OTT platforms and gained some viewership. Early data indicates reasonable performance, with streaming traffic over the weekend. Nevertheless, it is still uncertain if the film will maintain its popularity long term.
Visually, Bobby Aur Rishi Ki Love Story is beautiful, and the songs are heartwarming; however, the story, as well as the characters, are incredibly dull and fail to leave a lasting impression. Though fans of romantic comedies will enjoy the film, true romantics hoping for a captivating love story may not be satisfied.
